Tigercat introduces 'Big Wood' package for track feller bunchers
PARIS, ON, July 29, 2003 - Mainly in response to the requirements of Canadian west coast and US Pacific
northwest contractors who are routinely working in the large timber and steep
slope applications that dominate the coastal region, Tigercat has introduced
an optional 'Big Wood' package for its line of track feller bunchers.
The system will be well suited to contractors who specialize in large timber
applications especially those operating on slopes.
The optional "Big Wood' package consists of two components:
-
The heavy-lift conventional boom system
-
Upgraded high pressure attachment hydraulics
The boom system has larger main boom lift cylinders and unlike the ER boom,
both stick cylinders are deployed for lifting. The head tilt cylinder is also
larger.
The attachment pump is upgraded from a low pressure gear pump to a high
pressure gear or piston pump (depending on machine model) which
supplies higher pressure to the clamp arm cylinders for increased clamping force
and holding power of large, heavy trees. The attachment valve is also
upgraded to cope with the increased pressure.
The new 5702 felling saw is required to accommodate the high pressure
attachment hydraulics.
About the 5702 felling saw
The latest addition to the Tigercat felling head line-up is the 5702.
Although the 5702 is designed for big wood applications, the asymmetric arm
geometry and large accumulating area promote excellent performance in all stem
sizes.
Based on the 5700 felling saw, the new 5702 has large bore, high
pressure grab arm and accumulating arm cylinders for better control of large stems.
The spread between the clamp and accumulating arms is greater than the 5700
saw and the weight has been reduced by approximately 500 lbs (225 kg) to
improve the net lifting capacity of the carrier. The weight savings will
also allow the 5702 to be mounted on the 822/L830 series feller bunchers.
Other differences include an 18% increase in accumulation area over the 5700
and a wider 52 in. (1,320 mm) throat. The wrist is lower and optimally
positioned in the centre of the grab arms for improved control of large trees.
The high-torque twin-cylinder 110° wrist is an ideal option for the
big-wood package. The standard 30° and optional 340° wrists are also
available.
