A 6900 grinder owned by a municipality processes about 350 tonnes of yard waste per day. The annual leaf and yard waste collection windows run from April to July, and September to December. For the leaf and yard waste seasons, the 6900 is equipped with thee-inch forged tips and three-inch top grates, four-inch middle grates and six-inch bottom grates, a configuration that delivers the best results for topsoil, the desired end product.

After the material is ground, it is piled into windrows. The next process is windrow turning, once a week. This process continues until the temperatures of the rows are observed to be above 55 ° C for five weeks. After the five-week period, the material sits for another six months. It is turned once a month. Next, sand is added and the material is screened with a trommel. Finally, it is ready to be sold as topsoil.

When not processing yard waste, the 6900 is reequipped with two-inch teeth, along with larger grates, and moved to the forestry department yard to grind the limbs and logs generated from regular maintenance and storm damage. The end product is used as cover material at a landfill site.
